As per the definition, a vehicle or an automobile is a wheeled vehicle that carries passengers or transports anything. The history of vehicles started with steam automobiles then electrical and then gasoline engine vehicles. In the year 1769, the very first road automobile was a military tractor. It was invented by a French mechanic and engineer whose name was Nicolas Joseph (1725- 1804). Nicolas used steam engine to power the vehicle. It was built in the Paris Arsenal under his instructions by mechanic Brezin. This vehicle was built in order to be used by the French Army. In the following year or 1770, Nicolas built a steam powered tricycle which carried four passengers.

It is not sure who invented the first electrical vehicle and for this reason several inventors have been given credit. In the year 1828, Anyos Jedlik invented a car which was small in size and it is powered with the help of an electrical motor. Between the years 1832 and 1839, Robert Anderson belonging to Scotland made a carriage which was crude electric powered. In the year 1835, a blacksmith belonging to Brandon, Thomas Davenport built a small scale electric car. He was also the inventor of first American built DC electric motor.
